Biography

Debut LP 'Little Dreamer'
released 19th May on Blue Thumb

Single 'So Sublime'  is out now

Fusing a vintage sound & sensibility with a joyous, contemporary edge, Beth Rowley is essential listening for 2008. Born to British parents in Peru and raised in Bristol, the 26-year old singer/songwriter defies expectation with her towering vocals and sophisticated, gospel-tinged sound. Armed with an arsenal of timeless tracks, she releases her debut album 'Little Dreamer', April 21st.

Largely co-written by Beth with saxophonist Ben Castle (Duke Special), the 11-track debut follows the EP 'Violets' and demands attention. Produced by Steve Power (Blur) and Kevin Bacon & Jonathan Quarmby (Richard Hawley, Finlay Quaye), it smoulders with a seductive charm that blends blues and soul with the spirit of a New York gospel choir. Captivating and unique, her warm, understated sound marks the arrival of an exciting British artist.

Highlights include the Willie Nelson classic 'Angels Flying Too Close' (featuring Irish wonder Duke Special), the shimmering, scratchy blues feel of 'Sweet Hours', the gospel 'One Cloud' and the smoky allure of 'Nobody's Fault But Mine'. Equally, her soaring interpretation of Bob Dylan's 'I Shall Be Released' effortlessly does justice to the original (and then some), while the defiantly catchy first single 'Oh My Life' bristles with instantaneous melody. The tracks 'Almost Persuaded', It's Gonna Rain' & 'Beautiful Tomorrow' were all arranged by Beth.

Spotted at an open mic night in London's Ginglik, Beth trained at Brighton's Institute of Modern Music. "I cut my teeth on the live circuit, which, for me, was the only way. I then spent a year at the BIMM, where I met Carleen Anderson and developed my own sound."

After building up a steady stream of support through low-key live dates, Beth teamed up with Ben Castle in 2000 and began writing her own material.

"I'm influenced by a lot of bluegrass, gospel, soul & country, so my music has moments of them all. It's all of them and something else, something personal. For me this album's from the heart."

"I love that old-school sound of PP Arnold and the Ronettes, so there had to be some kind of throwback to that, but we also worked hard on getting the balance right. It's a real leveller between the past and the present – and somewhere in between my sound emerged."

Hi, Just want to say what a brilliant album "Little Dreamer" is. I have never listened to any album all the way through without at least fast forwarding one on the tracks but with yours - never ever have fast forwarded any. Can't wait to see you live on your next tour! Great voice and great beauty too. A stunning combination.

I fell in love with Beth Rowley's album the first time I heard it. I immediately included her take of "I Shall Be Released" on my Sirius Satellite Radio show The Bob Dylan Radio Hour, and I am reviewing it in Sing Out. Hope to get more Americans turned on to her. Even more I sure hope she comes over here to sing.

Beth,

As has been already said, you are the worthy successor to the beloved Eva Cassidy who was sadly taken from us. I can think of no better compliment.

Now...go girl! Have a great career - I'll be following your progress. Wonderful voice and interpretation.

Hi Beth. You were stunning at The Stables tonight. I said to you after the gig that you are the best blues singer I've heard since Eva Cassidy, and I meant it. Good luck!

It seems Beth that your days of singing with Jon and the boys at the end of a Thursday night in the Stone house are long gone. It was always a pleasure to hear you then and now you seem to be truly where you belong, giving the rest of the world the chance to hear the magic that is your voice. You deserve it all.

Looking forward to catching you live somewhere

Dear Beth, "Little Dreamer" arrived (at last!) this morning, and I want to tell you how much I'm enjoying it. You sing as naturally as a nightingale, and there's not a note out of tune. Just as important for me is the fact that I can hear every single word. You also know how to choose material that suits you. I'm already looking forward to the follow-up, and thanking Radio 2 for the airplay!

Hi Beth,

Thank God for Mojo Magazine!! Nobody's Fault But Mine blew me away! I hope you are coming to tour the US (Los Angeles) soon. Maybe you can get on KCRW FM Radio here in Santa Monica? I hope Mojo doesn't have an exclusive on that track. It needs to be on iTunes!!

Almost 40 years in and out of this crazy business and you really are one of THE best.

Beth's performance was amazing at Colston Hall (12th March), I just can't believe I've not heard of Beth till now, especially being a Brizzol Babe!? She rejuvenates my faith in new artists, performing real music. Lots of soul, intimacy & passion, so I just can't wait for "Little Dreamer" to release more tracks of this beautiful artist. New No1 Fan X

Hi Beth - I saw you live on stage at Oran Mor in Glasgow with Duke Special and you were fantastic - amazing voice! Enjoyed chatting to you afterwards, too. Here's hoping this will be your year - you deserve success. And your version of 'I Shall Be Released' is tremendous. Love the new look website too :)
avatardigitographer posted 2 years ago

'Violets' was a stunning debut, so I was happy to receive it for Christmas - it provided a great little soundtrack for my New Year and will carry through 2008 with ease. Love the Bob Dylan cover especially, very hard to follow such a classic - Nina Simone does a great version - and now you do too. Thank you xxxxxx
